St. Peter’s was the first Naval chapel built on the West Coast, and it is now the oldest Naval Chapel in the nation. It was built in 1901. The Chapel was in regular use by the Navy until the Mare Island Naval Shipyard closed in April 1996. The Chapel is now rented for weddings and tours.

St. Peter’s Chapel is the repository for one of the largest and finest collections of Louis Comfort Tiffany stained-glass windows in a single site in the West. Many of these windows and the plaques that adorn the walls and ceiling are memorials that link us to individuals and ships that served our country throughout its history. The Chapel’s traditional simple design, its graceful proportions, its wood-paneled interiors bathed in glowing light from 29 stained-glass windows and its pastoral setting make it an inviting sanctuary. We invite you to experience the Chapel through our website as a virtual member of the congregation wherever you live. If you live nearby and haven’t experienced this hallowed space, please plan to join us for our  program of music and history in the Chapel that accompanies our annual Daffodil Tea.

Daffodil Tea

The Daffodil Tea was founded as a fundraiser for St. Peter’s Chapel. The first two teas raised enough money to replace the worn carpet and pew cushions. Now the annual Tea is an opportunity to gather together to celebrate St. Peter’s Chapel and to acknowledge it’s special role in the lives of those who served the U.S. Navy at Mare Island. Won’t you join us for Tea in an Officer’s Mansion? For Tea details, click here.
