The art glass designed and produced by the studios of Louise Comfort Tiffany was the most popular and prolific of the turn of the 19th century. Chaplain Adam A. McAlister spearheaded the efforts of the congregation of St. Peter’s Chapel to place Tiffany stained-glass in the window openings of the Chapel completed in October 1901. He surely invited countless families and friends of key Navy personnel who served at Mare Island to memorialize them in a Tiffany designed window. Click here to read Chaplain McAlister’s May 1906 letter addressed to Mrs. Frank Wildes, wife of her late husband Admiral Wildes who died while serving as Commander of the Pacific Fleet. The letter is shared with us by Admiral Wildes’ great-grand daughter, Anne Sawyer Manners. The window in Admiral Wildes honor entitled “St. Paul”, was given by the “Citizens of Boston”. This photo display is a beginning of what we hope will be an ever improving online depiction of the windows in the Chapel. The photos were taken from 2003–2008 by a number of different photographers in natural light with no special photography set-up. As time goes by, we hope to offer the online viewer a higher quality set of images. So, please do return to our site. In the meantime, we hope you do get some sense of the beauty of the 29 windows designed by the Tiffany Studios, including the 16 signed windows. If you wish to contribute photos you have taken for addition to our online photo display or to link your photos to our website send us an email.
